Le massage thaï traditionnel au Old Medicine Hospital
Le Old Medicine Hospital, aujourd’hui Shivagakomarpaj School, est installé dans le nord de la Thaïlande à Chiang Maï. C’est la ville la plus importante pour étudier et pratiquer la médecine traditionnelle thaï. Il y a plus de centres de massage au m² que n’importe où dans le pays.
Parmi ceux-ci le Old Medicine Hospital a la plus ancienne et la plus prestigieuse réputation. Elle fût la première école à ouvrir ses portes aux étrangers occidentaux qui souhaitaient apprendre le massage thaï.
Ajahn Sintorn Chaichakan, son fondateur étudia la médecine traditionnelle au Wat Po de Bangkok dans les années 50. Il retourna à Chiang Mai en 1962 où il commença à pratiquer la médecine dans de petits dispensaires, installé à même le sol dans différents temples de la ville. 
À cette époque, le gouvernement était plus tourné vers la médecine occidentale et les traditions thaï étaient principalement gardées dans des institutions bouddhistes.
Vivant dans le nord de la Thaïlande, Arjahn Sintorn adapta sa pratique de massage et la médecine aux herbes et y incorpora des éléments de la culture du nord. Le plus important changement fût de ralentir la façon de masser du wat Po. Il adopta un style décontracté qui correspondait plus aux gens du Nord et par extension aux occidentaux aujourd’hui qui apprécient plus de douceur dans les manipulations.
Il ouvrit le Old Medicine Hospital en 1973 avec seulement 10 lits pour les patients. L’hôpital grandit et on y forma de nombreux étudiants Thaï et Occidentaux.
Faute d’aides gouvernementales, l’hôpital a dû malheureusement fermer ses portes. Il se consacre aujourd’hui à l’enseignement du massage thaï auquel s’ajoutent d’autres formations comme le massage relaxant des pieds, le massage aux huiles aromatiques, le massage aux compresses d’herbes chaudes.
Le nouveau directeur, fils du fondateur, essaie de mettre en place tant nationalement que localement une standardisation et une régularisation de l’industrie du massage pour améliorer la sécurité et l’authenticité des soins de santé pour les années à venir.
L’école est reconnue par le Ministère de la santé et délivre des diplômes certifiés conformes.
J’ai eu l’honneur d’y suivre la plupart de mes cours et je suis fière d’en faire découvrir l’enseignement.
